Several Illinois utility companies, including Ameren Illinois, have volunteered extra protection for vulnerable residents this year. Ameren Illinois along with ComEd, Liberty Utilities, Nicor, North Shore and Peoples Gas declared they would cease disconnections to residents this winter. Illinois Commerce Commission Chairwoman Carrie Zalewski said that the state implements a regular moratorium in a typical year, but those benefits can be confusing.
The voluntary moratorium will follow the same dates as the state’s statutory winter rules, which run through March 31.
