New Cannon originally from the RMA on display.
There is something new in the area that commemorates the Roosevelt Military Academy at the VFW in Aledo. Nick Seefeld tells WRMJ News a cannon is on display for the public to view.
“The city allowed me to move the second cannon from the old hospital up to the VFW (last) week. Ralph Hill, who we lost last year, managed Hahn Ready Mix for I don’t know how many years, probably 30 to 40 years. He played a huge part in working with me in making these memorials possible and with the last pouring of the concrete we had some of his old friends come up help us pour the slap and Hahn donated the concrete and we had a bronze plaque made through The Goldsmith to honor and remember Ralph and and it was placed into the slab with the last cannon.”
The area joins the Armed Forces Memorial and the 9/11 Memorial at the site.
“Dave Lawson told me several years ago, when he was still alive, that when these cannons were at the RMA during World War II they came and took the cannons that were on display and they melted them down to make new equipment. It was his belief that when these pieces were returned they were not actual functioning pieces that were used they were a combination of Naval guns off of a carrier or something and they made it to an Army carrier so basically they are for display purposes only.”
Seefeld recently talked to some of the RMA alumni and they have sent flags and flag poles that will be displayed with the cannons on special occasions.
The Cannon on display at the VFW was on display previously at the Roosevelt Military Academy then moved to the museum and the old hospital. One cannon is still on display at the American Legion Hall in Reynolds.
