More discussion expected this week on a proposed county wheel tax ordinance. The Mercer County Board meets Tuesday in regular session. Board members debated the subject last month at length and one of the key questions was determining how the money would be prioritized for road improvements says Ron Fullerlove of Sherrard.
Steve Moreland of Aledo is supportive of the concept, but admits there are some questions that need more attention, including the administration of the wheel tax.
The measure calls for a $15 fee for cars, motorcycles and recreational trailers. A $20 fee for trucks (plates B-Z), farm trailers and a business permanent plate. And a $30 fee for trailers/trucks (plates TA-to-TN) and farm trucks (plates VF-VZ). Money collected from the county wheel tax will be deposited in a special highway fund and the revenue shall be used for highway and bridge maintenance and construction. Penalty for non-compliance is listed at between $30 and $150. The wheel tax would generate in the neighborhood of $400,000 per year.
